Spur Dikes or Rock Vanes increase Kinetic Energy

Rock and stone walls are less costly than concrete walls.

Is there a better way to increase the velocity of the flow and thereby reduce the size of the system by a factor of eight?
The HUG adds over three times the increase of velocity created from its Vortex. The turbine’s power is proportional to the cube of its average velocity. Thus, a doubling of the average speed of the flow results in an eight-fold increase in its power, which results in the lowest cost: $0.01/kWh.
The resulting kinetic energy (KE) would be increased by a power of three: v³ to 6³/2³or 27 times. The 4 knot (2 m/sec) current becomes 6 m/sec in the HUG and the KE increases from 50 kW to 1350 kW for 20,000 homes instead of 500 homes.

The HUG can be configured in arrays of much larger capacity – potentially hundreds of megawatts.

Kipawa Hydro Reservoir

The Kipawa Hydro Reservoir

This large Ottawa River reservoir, built by the Canadian government at the beginning of the last century, is already more than sufficient to add a full-time 70 MW power plant but it would significantly impact the environment. Developed by the Kipawa Reservoir community, this project would be by far the most profitable in Quebec at this time, and would provide a return on investment within just a few years.Kipawa Hydro HUG

The 132 MW Tabaret project will eliminate the aquatic ecosystem of the Kipawa River to replace and unused 17 MW Unit and a 5 MW plant.

There are other, smarter and more reasonable options for producing hydro power on the Kipawa watershed: the HUG Hydro System. There are two approaches: one uses kinetic energy of moving water of the rapids and the second use the energy of gravity from small waterfalls.

Lake Chad Basin Water Transfer

Lake Chad is located in the far west of Chad and the northeast of Nigeria. Parts of Lake Chad basin also extend to Niger and Cameroon. This is a proposal to transfer water to the Lake Chad Basin over the Mongos Mountains of Central African Republic. This will be accomplished by a series of dams all along the Ouaka River.

Lake Chad is fed mainly by the Chari River through the Logone tributary, which used to provide 90 per cent of its water. It was once Africa’s largest water reservoir in the Sahel region, covering an area of about 26,000 square kilometers bigger than Israel or Kuwait.

Lake Chad is economically important, providing water to more than 68 million people living in the four countries surrounding it (Chad, Cameroon, Niger, and Nigeria) on the edge of the Sahara Desert.  Unfortunately, Lake Chad has contracted by a massive 95%. 

The Lake Chad Basin Commission (LCBC) has raised more than $5 million for a feasibility study to supply water from the Congo River Drainage System. This can be accomplished by building a series of dams in order to pump water uphill from the Congo River to the Chari River and then on to Lake Chad.

The important series of dams are built in the Mongos Mountains where there is very little civilization. This system is not unlike a canal system with its series of gates or instead the system used will be a series of dams along the pathway. Since the dams are non-powered, an unlimited amount of rocks and stones can be dynamited from the mountain side. 

 How many dams would be required to raise the water level to 1000 m?  Each dam location would be selected on how narrow the valley would be.  It may take as many as 10 dams each raising the level by  an average of 100 m.

Because Lake Chad is very shallow—only 10.5 metres (34 ft) at its deepest—its area is particularly sensitive to small changes in average depth. The surface area is 26,000 km2 x  The water level of Lake Chad must be raised to another 5 meters x 26,000 km² . This is equivalent to 1.3e+10 square meters.Lake Chad RecoveryChad Lake Recovery

One 1.5 m pipe normally delivers water at the rate of 2.65 m/sec. The water transfer pipeline of a set of three HUG spiraling pipes has a 1.5 m width each and an area of 1.75 m2 x 3 = 5.3 m2 x 2.65 m/sec = 14 m3/sec normally : 1.3e+10 m²÷ 14 m3/sec = 92,800,000 seconds or 1074 days for full recovery.

TAP THE VORTEX

To Tap the Vortex for Hydro Power

A good place to start to create energy from the tides is in the Bay of Fundy where there is one of the highest tides in the world in order to tap its Vortex.

As usual it took an inordinate amount of time to raise the initial amount of investments mostly from various government bodies from both Canada and United States. Then the predictable came true, the propellers of the turbine system failed. Risks can be expected when working in entirely unfamiliar environments. Then, there is more time wasted trying to raise funds for a different type of blade.  

We are talking about a five-story turbine that weighs 400 tons for a 35 kW turbine. Size and weight has become the problem. The cost of the power sky rockets to $0.53/kWh compared to the current average of $0.06/kWh.hydro tidal turbine

So how does these “innovations” start? It starts with a minimum requirement of one megawatt. The formula for kinetic energy dictates how big this system has to be, which is humongous. Think of the maintenance problems if these huge systems were on land, and then double the problem under deep water. 

Researchers at the Korea Ocean Research and Development Institute (KORDI) chose the site because it has flows up to 12 knots between islands at Uldolmok. Again the unexpected happened: the installation time was miscalculated and a 1000 ton system on a barge capsized, which caused a two year delay.Kordi Korea Helical Turbine

Which renewable energy source has the most potential? Mankind has been benefiting from the “energy of moving water…since before the Roman Empire” to power waterwheels for mills.  Today the global renewable energy industry is worth $615 billion. Today it is probably wind or solar, whose technologies are falling precipitously and making those investments economical. However, don’t discount hydro power, which now accounts for about 10% of the electricity and which could also grow in the coming decades.

 “Let’s not lose sight of what we know for certain about hydro power — it has greatly contributed to a healthier environment and economic prosperity and can sustainability grow to do more. Hydro power provides many benefits in the fight to address climate change and for cleaner air,” says the National Hydropower Association. 

Base level electricity is a requirement. Most hydro power facilities can quickly go from zero power to maximum output, making them ideal for meeting sudden changes in demand for electricity. 

The US government is so focused at other renewable sources of energy like wind and solar, it may be overlooking the contributing potential of hydroelectricity. More investment into damless hydro is the key to its development into a feasible renewable and clean alternative for power production.

The advocacy group points to a US Department of Energy (DOE) report that says the energy form could grow by 50,000 megawatts by 2050. That, in turn, would cut greenhouse gas emissions by 112,000 metric tons of CO2/megawatt and save $4.2 billion/megawatt in avoided damages from heat-trapping emissions. 

The next phase of hydro power, however, will focus on smaller hydro units that are less disruptive environmentally but still useful in supplying electricity to remote areas. A 2007 Electric Power Research Institute study estimated that there is a potential for adding a 300 megawatts of damless hydro power in the US by 2025.  Meanwhile, at least 100 countries are developing small hydro plants, with the most potential in the former Soviet Union, South Asia and South America.

THE idea of extracting energy from an ocean wave and turning it into electricity is an alluring one. It has the potential to fill in the gaps that are left by wind and sun power plants when it is calm and dark.

 We calculate that the cost of producing electricity from the HUG will be around $0 .003 kilowatt hour. That compares with 16 cents a kilowatt hour for offshore wind farms, six cents for the onshore variety and a grid-connected fossil-fuel power station at five cents or more.

 HUG Wave Energy Systems are ultra-simple, only three moving parts: the helical turbine, the submersible pump and the electric generator (which is accessible and kept dry).  The simple HUG design will operate for decades with no more maintenance than an occasional scrub to remove accumulated barnacles.

The HUG uses higher waves to fill a higher reservoir to a greater water level than the surrounding ocean. The lower Pump HUG has a helical turbine, which engages a submersible pump in order to send water up a HUG pipeline to a second Funnel HUG above the water line on its own barge where its second helical turbine engages an electric generator in a dry environment.

There is wide consensus that fossil fuels will probably dominate the world energy mix until at least 2040, due to the lack of cheap, practical alternatives.

PROBLEM AREAS

China is still building two coal power plants a week. In both India and China, air pollution and congestion in the biggest cities are already appalling, which will limit the scope for a richer population to buy ever more cars.

India still relies on coal for 58% of its primary energy needs. It hopes to reduce its dependence on oil (28% of the mix) by 10% by 2022, and plans to double the share of natural gas from 7% to 15%

OIL AND WAR

The Muslim world has become polarized into Sunni and Shia and it is fighting international Su-Shi Civil War. Minority Shia, which is only 10% of the Muslim world, are poking the other 90% Sunni in the eye with a stick. Over 95% of terror victims are Muslims.
Nigeria, Libya, Algeria, Yemen, and South Sudan are hot new battle zones due in large part to their oil wealth.

Fracking is the most powerful weapon for geopolitical change in the past decade. It has bankrupted Russia, Venezuela, Nigeria, Brazil and the Arab World forcing deep political change and near revolution.
Today terrorists are starved by the low price of oil–they cannot do their big plans. Weapons and training cost a lot of money.

MOST WORLD GOVERNMENTS

The US is importing half of its oil currently and it will only be the world’s largest producer of oil in a few years and Canada has oil reserves larger than Saudi Arabia.

Political pressure to “keep it in the ground” only works in developed western societies. Yet even Prime Minister Justin Trudeau commented that he knew no country that would allow its oil reserves in the ground to remain untouched.

Governments do not have the political will to implement their climate goals at anything like the speed the Paris agreement envisages. Fossil fuels are a major revenue earner for many governments, usually in the form of excise or hydrocarbons taxes. carbon cost
